Crossroads Care Harris was set up in 1985 in response to a need to provide respite care in the home to carers of ill, elderly or people with disabilities.  Crossroads Care Harris accepted its first client in August 1985 and has continued to respond to the changing needs of users since then.   As well as providing respite for family carers, we also provide support to vulnerable people living alone.   We provide a trained care attendant to go into the home to take over the duties of the family carer or to provide support if the user lives alone. In June 2020 we became a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation. We are affiliated to Crossroads (Scotland) and are registered with the Care Inspectorate.

 

We co-operate with Social and Community Services, Community Health Service, GPs, Hospital Discharge team and other voluntary organisations to provide a professional seamless service which is flexible and is geared to the needs of users and carers.

 

The services provided are flexible and include:

• Providing respite care in the home

• Providing support visits to vulnerable people living alone

• accompanying young people with disabilities to swimming and activities,

• transporting elderly people to day care,

• accompanying users to medical appointments,

• taking people for necessary shopping or bank visits

• providing emergency night care at the request of GPs or Community Nurse

 

Hours provided to service users will be according to assessed need and depend on staff capacity. The hours can be provided as a block or can be divided throughout the week.  Visits can range from daily, once weekly to occasional.

 

We have a staff of 13 sessional care attendants who are highly trained, are all PVG members and are registered with the Scottish Social Services Council.

 

The service is funded by Western Isles Health and Social Care Integrated Joint Board.  Last year this amounted to 49% of expenditure, the gap being funded from donations, fundraising and our reserves.   The service is managed by a Management Committee and a Service Manager.  The Chair is Mrs Dolly MacLean, the Vice-Chair is Mrs Cathy B Morrison , the Treasurer is Mrs Kathleen Macleod, the Secretary is Mrs Morag Munro and the Service Manager is Mrs Marion Macdonald.
